Will my bike rack work with...?
I have a Bell 2-Bike Double-Back Rack http://www.amazon.com/Bell-111958-2%252dBike-Double%252dBack-Rack/dp/B000IT2VSM, It holds up to 66 Pounds. I have 2 Mountain Bikes, a 26"inch Huffyhttp://www.buzzillions.com/dz_296407_men_huffy_26_lakota_bicycle_reviews, its heavy, and a 24" schwinn,http://www.buzzillions.com/dz_723095_schwinn_traverse_24_girl_mountain_bicycle_reviews, its heavy too, they fit together on the bike rack, but I'm very worried if they will fall on the highway on our 2 hour trip. I don't know if its durable enough and I'm really worried. Will it break or will the bikes fall off? We have a 1996 oldsmobile http://www.theautochannel.com/media/photos/oldsmobile/96_oldsmobile_88_ls_1.jpg PLEASE HELP
Well, you could always weigh the bikes.
Regardless, I suspect your two bikes definitely exceed the maximum capacity of the rack. Although the bikes might make it just fine, there's a good chance that the extra weight will subject the various components of the rack to damaging stress. Those extra pounds banging up and down on a road trip can fatigue screws, couplings and other fasteners. Since the rack mfr gave a max capacity, you'd be best to stay under it. If the rack were to fail, and another vehicle were to be damaged, there's always the chance that your insurance company could give you financial grief when it discovers that you exceeded a mfr's safety limit.
Since what you're comtemplating could cause property damage and/or personal injury to another, I'd find a way to lighten up the load or use a different rack.
