value of a 1930 ladies schwinn bicycle?
you bicycle dealers out there. I purchased at a yard sale last week a 1930 ladies schwinn bicycle. It has the origional horn chain guard handle grips and even the origional color of the bike. It is almost in mint condition. Wonder what the value would be of that bike. Would like some information on it. thank you.
Just as anything there is good news and bad news with your bike. This is a bit long so bear with me....
The good news is that since it is in good shape there may be a reasonable value to it. The bad news is that since it is a womens bike if sold it will likely be stripped for parts to restore a Mens Bike.
Just to do a little verification before we go further...
-a bike of that vintage will likely have almost no chrome in it with the exception of the handlebars and stem... perhaps part of the tank and chainguard will have nickel plating which appears as a dull silver.
-The rims will be either white or brown with contrasting pinstripe.
-Both the saddle and handgrips should have a "Schwinn" logo in script, and the grips would either be black or white.
-The chainguard will have a round logo with the words "Schwinn Chicago" on it.
-The serial number will look as though it has been stamped by hand... very crude and uneven. Usually found on a rear dropout (where the rear wheel is attached) or on the bottom bracket ("under" the bike where the crank is). If it is on the head tube (where the fork is) then it is at least 1965 or later. A numbering machine was employed beginning about 1948 so the numbers are very even and sharp.
-Cantilever frames (using a double tube from the fork tube to the seat tube) were introduced in 1938.
-The chainguard will be CLAMPED onto the frame rather than having little "L"s welded to the frame and screwed on. This change from "clamped" to "welded" was made about 1938 as well.
-It will NOT have an oval name badge on the front. The oval badge started about 1964 (I think...).
-The rear dropouts (where the rear wheel is bolted on) will have the slots facing backwards- kind of like a 2 pronged fork. The "forward" facing dropouts began about 1948.
-All serial numbers prior to 1948 were lost in a factory fire, so exact dating is a guess based on specific features of the bike.
-The brake arm (little "arm" of metal attached to the rear wheel hub, and to the frame via a metal band) should say "New Departure" on it. There are some variants, but this is most common. It is possible that there is a date stamp on the hub shell... reach between the spokes and wipe off the crud that has accumulated. The general code is a 2 digit month and a 2 digit year. This may give you an approximate year, perhaps within 2 years.
-If the bike has a model name "Paramount", "Superior", or "New World" it is no older than 1938.
-Finally, the most accurate way to determine the year (it is not foolproof) if the bike passes the above tests is to take the crank out of the bike and check for a date stamp on it. This may vary up to 5 years. If the crank is not original then it will do no good at all.
-If the serial number starts with 2 letters then it is likely that you have a bike produced between 1965 and 1978. The first letter is the month (January is "A", etc), second letter is the year (1965 is "A", etc SKIPPING the letters "I" and "O").
OK, so if your bike passes all these and you determine it is prior to 1938, the value based on your assessment is somewhere in the $400 to $600 range but this is heavily dependent on it's exact condition. Had it been a mens frame the value would be roughly double.
Now that you have muddled through all the gobbledeegook be aware that the value of bikes is very volatile and subject to change with the shift in the wind as well as a professional appraisal of the bike... not an auction estimate, but a bicycle collectors estimate. Auction estimates are generally inflated and cater to people who have nothing better to do with their money other than buy old stuff regardless of price.
Good luck!
