What would be a good cruiser to get for a first bike?
I've never ridden before but my friends and my dad has a motorcycle. I'm thinking about getting into it and was wandering what bikes I should be looking at. I definitely want a cruiser and I like the black look that kinda sits low. My friend got a Harley Iron 883 a couple years ago and I kinda like that look. I just saw the Honda Shadow Phantom and I also like the way it looks. Any other recommendations would be appreciated as far as looks and the amount of power it should have. I don't plan on going real fast or anything but I just hear of people buying their first bike with not much power then when the get more comfortable riding they wish they had gotten something bigger.
If you like cruisers, you can start a little bigger than if you were on a standard. Cruisers have a lower center of gravity, and a lower seat, so they are easier to manage for their size. I had read that half or more of all new Harley riders were total newbies, the Harley was their first bike. And I wondered why total noobs would want such a dauntingly big and heavy bike! Then I rented one for a day and I was amazed at how easy it was to handle. Not a good handling bike, but easy to handle. A newbie really could ride one of these. I have also ridden a Vulcan 750 and a Shadow 750, and they feel as light and easy to ride as motorscooters, but a bike that size can cruise on the freeway pretty well.
Harleys are very nice, but they're expensive! I really think the Japanese give you a better deal for the money. Honda Shadow, Yamaha Star, Kawasaki Vulcan, Suzuki Boulevard. They are all very dependable and reliable and long-lived.
Cruisers are statistically safer, not because of the bike but because of how you ride it. They support a relaxed, laid-back riding style. They are not especially fast, and bigger ones are not that much faster than smaller ones, they are bigger for more stability, stamina, and comfort. Sportbikes get into trouble because they're made to push the envelope, so they crash more. Just as 4wd vehicles get stuck in mud more, because they get taken into the mud more. So a cruiser is a good choice for a first bike.
If you want to be able to cruise at highway speeds, you want at least 750cc. 1000cc would not be too big.
I'm not sure about the Sportster. I never rode one, but it doesn't look like a -cruiser- to me. I know they're very popular and that a lot of people learn to ride on them. I see a lot of Sportsters for sale used, relatively cheap, and I've always wondered if this was because people hate them and want to dump them and get something else, or if they love them so much they want to trade up to a bigger Harley, a Dyna or Softail.
