Can I have a vintage Bicycle be reproduced by someone?
There are bike shops that make custom bikes for people, so would It be possible for a shop like that to Remake a vintage bicycle? It might be a little hard to make and will probably cost more than actually buying a vintage bike for $300 or something like that. But I am wondering If It Is possible If someone can reproduce a vintage bicycle. Is It possible to make the bike look and function and work just like the original? They might be able to but It Is possible they won't because of copyright Issues but I don't really know, that Is why I am asking this question. Any one know If this Is possible? Thanks
A 1936 Monark Silver King bicycle Is what I was Interested In. I want to use It and enjoy It so I was thinking new (So I wouldn't put more wear and tear on the vintage one) but figured It would be expensive. Although there Is nothing like original. These bike are hard to come by although I just started looking too.
There have been several instances of companies making exact reproductions of old bicycle models, and it isn't as outlandish as you might expect. Check out http://www.nostalgiamerchants.com/
Exact reproductions of bicycles from Columbia, Monark, and Roadmaster have been available in the past from various sources, were made in numbers similar to the originals, and sold at what has been a reasonable price... perhaps $1000 or so. The key is that the bikes that were offered all had the original tooling available.
If you wanted a single bike made to original specs a large number of professionals would have to spend long hours handbuilding things. A single 1936 Monark replica would easily cost in excess of $25,000.00. Probably more.
Sooo, the idea of making a replica bike might be intriguing, but there are much better ways to spend the money, in my opinion.
EDIT: WLE, I said that reproducing a single copy of that Monark might cost $25K, not that it would be worth it.
