Single speed bicycle vs. multi-speed bicycle?
I use my father's 29 year old single-speed BSA deluxe bicycle. I've kept it in good shape and I have done a 100KM trip spread over one evening and the next morning. I have been thinking of getting an 18-gear system installed on it.
I would like to know what real advantages I can get by installing such a system. Also, though some of the advantages are obvious, are there also any disadvantages of a multi-speed bike compared to a single-speed bike that you are aware of?
If I do continue with the single-speed configuration, what are the ways in which I can maximise the efficiency of my bike?
Repair and upkeep. A single speed bike has MUCH lower repair and upkeep cost compared to a multi-speed bike. Because you are not changing gearing your sprockets, rings and chain will hold up longer than a multi-speed. With multi-speed you can have issues like a stretched out or broken chain faster, bent derailleur or hanger, worn out teeth on sprockets and or rings, stretched out cables. Like the other posters have mentioned you will have to replace and install a lot of new components to make the upgrade. Getting a second bike that is already a multi-speed is the way to go.
