With cars, what is a dump valve?
Simple explanation please, if possible.
I sometimes read car forums where other car people laugh at where certain "modders" have moved their dump valves.. but I don't know why cause I don't understand.

All turbo cars suffer from turbo lag, this is the time taken for the turbo to get up to speed from a stand still. If you imagine the turbo as a fan with the hot exhaust gases blowing the fan around, on the other end of the exhaust fan there is another fan that blows air into the engine. When the throttle is open the air flows with out any resistance however when the throttle is closed (Changing gear etc) all of a sudden there is not air flow and the turbo stalls.
A dump valve is a piston device that opens when the throttle closes and allows the pressure in the air side to vent to eaither atmospher or back into the inlet of the turbo.
The idea behind this is to allow the turbo to continue to spin when the throtle is closed, thus reducing the amount of turbo lag.
Sounds good and does make a difference to the cars performance.
